Abstract
Background: Elevated homocysteine concentrations have been suggested as one of the modifiable risk factors for cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between homocysteine and cognitive function in the healthy elderly.

Methods: This study population consisted of a sample of 266 healthy participants from a health promotion center, aged 60 or older. Fasting plasma homocysteine concentrations were measured. Serum c-reactive protein (CRP), Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), fasting plasma glucose level, cholesterol, and conventional vascular disease risk factors were assessed. Cognitive function was evaluated with Korean Mini Mental State Examination (K-MMSE), delayed recall, animal naming, and clock drawing test.

Results: The subjects¡¯ mean age was 66 years and their mean MMSE score was 25.8. Plasma glucose and ESR level were correlated with MMSE scores, whereas homocysteine, CRP, cholesterol level were not associated with cognitive function in the univariate analysis. However there was no association of between homocysteine, ESR, glucose level to cognitive function after adjusting age, gender.

Conclusion: In our study no association was found between homocysteine and cognitive function in the healthy elderly.
